Data management and analytical tools for environmental science series

Our fourth webinar series, led by the NERC Environmental Data Service (NERC EDS) focusses on research data management and the analytical tools available to support researchers in the environmental sciences. The EDS provides a focal point for NERC’s scientific data and information. It consists of a network of five data centres which curate data from environmental scientists working in the UK and around the world. This series showcases the services provided by the EDS and illustrates how it supports the open data agenda. We will hear how tools developed by the EDS enable interoperability, support large-scale data analysis and facilitate multi- and trans-disciplinary research. Webinar Series Listing

Sensing the Environment Series

Our third webinar series, led by Expert Network member Dr Liz Bagshaw, focusses on ‘Sensing the Environment’. Reflecting the wide availability of ubiquitous, low-cost sensors and microprocessor controllers, there are now more opportunities than ever to plan and undertake environmental sensing research projects. But what should you measure, and how often should you take readings? How close together or distant should the sensors be placed? How can you ‘densify’ observations in response to incidents? Should you process data into information at the ‘edge’ of the network, or bring all data into a central hub? How can information reach decision makers in the most appropriate time and format? These are the kind of issues we will seek to address in our third webinar series, hearing from leading experts in environmental sensing. Webinar Series Listing

Webinar Series Listing
  1.  20th May 2021Virtual labs and digital environments: can virtual lab technology support a paradigm shift towards a more open, collaborative and integrative environmental science? – Professor Gordon Blair, Lancaster University and Dr. Michael Hollaway, UKCEH
  2.  14th January 2021Lessons from applying decision science in the public health sector – Professor Karl Claxton
  3.  17th December 2020Why Big Data and AI machine learning will never work for critical problems of risk assessment – causal reasoning and knowledge to the rescue – Professor Norman Fenton
  4.  3rd December 2020The Flaw of Averages and How to Cure It – Professor Sam L Savage
  5.  12th November 2020The value of information and how to decide what and how much you should be measuring – Douglas W Hubbard
Key themes covered include:
    • We most often collect the wrong data – most resources are spent on measurements that have no value for the decisions they are meant to support
    • We often need less data than we think we need – we only to reduce uncertainties enough to make a clear decision
    • Everything can be quantified and applied to improving decisions, however seemingly intangible.
    • The flaw of averages – why we are nearly always behind schedule and over budget, and why relying only on averages is so dangerous and yet the norm
    • Why Big Data and AI are heading for disaster. Expert knowledge is critical but often over-looked and under-utilised.
    • It is a fallacy that conveying uncertainty and its implications for a decision is too complicated for a general audience.
    • Open, collaborative and integrative environmental science
