Digital – the key to unlocking Environmental Challenges

NERC Digital Unlocking Environmental Challenges

Since its commencement in 2019, the Constructing a Digital Environment, CDE, programme has supported a substantial body of applied environmental research across the UK, exploring the role of digital approaches and data science in advancing environmental scientific understanding and supporting environmental decision making. On September 5th 2023 we held a one-day event at the Royal Society in London where this work was presented, with a showcase of the ‘state-of-art’ digital approaches adopted, with demonstrations of how these can aid and support directly evidence-based and informed environmental decisions and policy making.

The event will cover the span of all the research projects we have supported, and will draw and distil from these a set of insightful presentations, discussions and exhibitions addressing how digital approaches offer a key to unlock complex environmental challenges.

Who should attend?

We are keen to reach out to those who have a professional responsibility towards environmental management and decision making. The event will provide insight into how the latest digital techniques can aid and support policy makers and decision makers in their role.

The event is therefore aimed at both public and private sector interests seeking an expert briefing and demonstration of the value of tools and techniques across a ‘technology arc’ from the use and placement of sensors, the management and curation of bodies of environmental data, advanced analytical approaches – AI and machine learning, modelling and quantitative methods, and the best ways results of such analyses can be visualised and communicated effectively.

Highlights to expect of the day

During the day, you will have lots of opportunity to learn about the wide range of projects NERC supported via the ‘Constructing a Digital Environment’ programme, with particular focus given to the impact this work has had for stakeholders and practitioners. As well as the talks from each of these projects, each of the demonstrators will also present an exhibition of their work for you to visit during the breaks where the teams will be pleased to discuss the work undertaken. Key to the day is the range of discussion and presentations from key stakeholders and practitioners who use and are the beneficiaries of digital approaches in their environmental work. You will hear from public and private sector speakers about how digital approaches have been adopted, and the learning points gleaned along the way.

Please note, it is our intention to make a abridged video available for the events and presentations of the day on our YouTube channel, so please keep an eye on this page for announcements of that.
