CDE Webinar – Dr Elizabeth Kent, NOC. Making old data more useful

On Friday 10th June, we were pleased to welcome Dr Liz Kent Unwin of the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), to present her webinar entitled ‘Making old data more useful’. This talk continued our ‘Data digitisation, rescue, and re-purposing’ webinar series.

Historical data archives are being expanded with newly- collected and newly-digitised surface marine observations. This talk will discuss the steps that are needed to make sure these data can be fully integrated into the existing data systems for climate applications.

Climate data is most often used as data products rather than raw observations – methods to construct these products work best when detailed information about the observations, and the conditions under which they were recorded are available. Data systems that can retain or generate rich descriptions of the observations are key to quantifying uncertainty and estimating any bias adjustments needed. Improving data systems is therefore a necessary step toward improved climate data records.
