Archived Environmental Data Discovery Trails – Data processing with Snap! Welcome to the Digital Trail challenge: Archived Environmental Data Discovery Trails - Data processing with Snap! December 22, 2024 We have set 4 questions to explore data held by the UK Polar Data Centre (UK PDC). Here's the challenge: The UK PDC collects Arctic and Antarctic environmental data in the UK and makes it available online. You can read about it here. The reason Data Centres exist is to make the information they collect accessible to anyone who wants to use it. The data has been collected over many years by researchers and is added to constantly. A data trail gives you a guided example of making use of the data. This trail will explore environmental data from Antarctica collected in 2015 recorded on the Brunt Ice Shelf. We'll be asking you to process the data using Snap! to find the answers to our questions. Let's get started The quiz takes about 20-30 minutes. Download the worksheet which will introduce you to Snap! and provide you with instructions on how to access and process the data to answer the questions online. The links in the worksheet are also in the text below, which will open the relevant information/websites in a new tab. You will also need to download the data from the British Antarctic Survey and the Snap! block file, which is zipped so you'll need to unzip it (right click, then extract all) to use it: PDC data trail blocks. You are now ready to open Snap! and follow the worksheet and answer our questions. 1. What information is recorded in the environmental data file (name the types of information recorded)? Answer format: text naming the columns exactly as they are shown on screen after "# Columns:". 2. How many data points are there? The answer should a number 3. What is the minimum temperature (in deg. C) recorded over the year’s data? The answer should a number given to 2 decimal places 4. What is the maximum wind speed (in knots) over the year’s data? The answer should a number given to 2 decimal places Time's up
