On Friday 2nd July we were pleased to welcome Professor Jane K. Hart of the University of Southampton to present her webinar entitled ‘Environmental Sensor Networks: when will the revolution happen?’. The talk continued our ‘Sensing the Environment’ webinar series. Jane is a Professor of Physical Geography in the School of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton. Her research is concerned with using Environmental Sensor Networks and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to understand real world environmental processes. In particular she developed the Glacsweb system to monitor subglacial processes and the Mountainsensing project, the first IoT monitoring of a remote environment (Cairngorms Plateau). She is the Vice-president of the EGU Earth and Space informatics (ESSI) division, Chair of the AGU Leptoukh ESSI award committee as well as being on the Constructing a Digital Environment Expert Network and Vice-President of the Quaternary Research Association. Her seminar will discuss her experiences of using sensing systems in glacial and mountain environments as well as discussing the challenges and predictions for the future.
