On Thursday 20th May we were pleased to welcome Professor Gordon Blair of Lancaster University and Dr Michael Hollaway of UKCEH to present their joint webinar entitled ‘Virtual labs and digital environments: can virtual lab technology support a paradigm shift towards a more open, collaborative and integrative environmental science?’, together with a live demonstration of the NERC Data Labs tool. The talk concluded our ‘Data for Decision Making’ webinar series. Gordon is a Distinguished Professor of Distributed Systems in the School of Computing and Communications, Lancaster University. He holds a prestigious EPSRC 5-year Senior Fellowship investigating the role of digital technology in living with environmental change (DT/LWEC and is also co-Director of the Centre of Excellence in Environmental Data Science (CEEDS), a joint initiative between Lancaster University and UKCEH. The webinar also featured a live demo by Dr Mike Hollaway of a particular virtual lab in action (DataLabs). Mike is a Senior Data Scientist at UKCEH and focuses on leading and contributing to the development and application of novel data science methods to different environmental science challenges. He works on the Data Science of the Natural Environment (DSNE) project, which utilises virtual labs to bring data scientists, environmental scientists and computer scientists together in one platform, to seamlessly collaborate and share various data and analytical methods.
