Masterclass: Digital Twins in the Built Environment

This masterclass will be led by Dr Hua Zhong of Nottingham Trent University (hua.zhong@ntu.ac.uk) with special guest speaker Professor Tim Broyd, FREng., Director of Institute for Digital Innovation in the Built Environment, UCL and Dr Ling Ma of UCL (Ling.Ma@ucl.ac.uk).

Monday 11th July 2022 (at #CDE22):

1:10pm – Talk by Prof. Tim Broyd

1:40pm – 2:10pm Demonstration 1: Generating 3D model (photogrammetry) and viewing in VR

Required devices: a mobile phone and a laptop.

Required applications: Sketchfab, SCANN3D/PolyCam applications will need to be installed on the mobile phone.

Steps:

  1. Download and install a 3D scanner application using App store (for Android users, SCANN3D; for Apple users, PolyCam).
  2. Download and install Sketchfab using App store.
  3. Use the 3D scanner application to scan an object (take your time, follow the instructions and take many pictures).
  4. Export your model using the “.obj” format (choose the free trail option, please remember to cancel it after this session).
  5. Create a Sketchfab account on https://sketchfab.com/
  6. Using your laptop, upload the model exported (the zip file) from your 3D scanner app to Sketchfab.
  7. Open the mobile application “sketchfab”. Attach Google cardbox and open your model and view it in VR.

2:10 pm-2:40 pm Introduction and Demonstration 2: Digital twin in transportation infrastructure
Steps
:

  1. Brief introduction of digital twin algorithms for roads and cities and several related applications based on road digital twins.
  2. Present road widening .exe program for highway widening based on digital twin.
  3. Present road alignment planning process based on digital twin.
  4. Present coloured bridge .exe program in the CIM environment.
